저자는 19세기 말부터 20세기 초까지의 작가 가운데 가장 많은 대중적인 인기를 누렸던 작가입니다. 저자는 영국 랭커셔 지방의 산업도시인 맨체스터에서 철물점을 경영하는 에드윈 호즈슨의 장녀로 태어났습니다.그녀는 세 살 때 아버지를 여의었고, 그 후로 집안 형편이 어려워지자 철물점을 팔고 1865년 온 가족이 미국 테네시 주로 이사를 했습니다.가난하게 살았던 그녀는 살림살이에 보탬이 되기 위해 글을 썼다고 합니다.그녀의 첫 번째 책은 로맨스 소설로 소녀들의 패션 잡지에 살렸고 그녀의 재능을 눈여겨본 한 편집자 덕분에 진정한 작가로 거듭나게 되었습니다. 그녀는 1924년 세상을 떠날 때까지 40여 권의 책과 수많은 단편을 세상에 내놓았습니다.
